Totally Unicorn, Lazerface, 10k, Baker Vs. Ox • Sept 30 • Wollongong NSW

To celebrate the up and coming release of their new film clip for 'Cool Dads With Cool Sons', TOTALLY UNICORN are headin' south on a 4-show whirlshit tour this September through your backdoor and out that bottom bit of Australia with ROBOTOSAURUS* of Adelaide and LAZERFACE from Melbourne.

Supporting the party jerks at Yours and Owls will be gameboy enthusiast "10,000 Free Men and Their Families" with live wall art by Baker & Ox. This hometown show is set to be the highlight of "The Backdoors and Blowouts Tour" and with only 50 tickets released for sale, it is guaranteed to sell out.

Tickets for this one-off show are just $15 and available for presale at Yours and Owls from September 1, SO GET IN QUICK!!

U know em..... This is their tour.

Lazerface...a semi robotic leviathan, damaged, confused, horrific.. an artificial and mathematical machine, oscillating frequencies of paranoia stemming from something unknown..

We sonically document the life and times of the invented character..Lazerface.

Ten Thousand Free Men & Their Families started making music with Game Boys as a joke. Sadly, over time it became very serious. Now Tom is stuck with a silly name for what turned out to be his favourite project. He is in the Business of CA$H MONEY!
Ten Thousand Free Men & Their Families is a political figure who yells at Nintendo Game Boys and calls it music.

10k in Honi Soit Magazine

"Published since 1929 by the Student's Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Sydney, Honi Soit has a colorful and sometimes controversial history. Our Alumni of famous and infamous editors have produced some of their more interesting and controversial work in the pages of Honi Soit. Many have gone on to become leaders in the arts, journalism, law and Australian politics."

...Until now.

And no... I'm not playing again in Newcastle with the same line-up as last year. But I will be playing with Totally Unicorn on the last leg of their tour!

Death Rave: Chipmusic Warehouse Party

ALLCAPS Records Presents:
Death Rave: Chiptune Warehouse Party.
Featuring an 8-Bit Arcade, bringing redundant gaming consoles back to life for one night only.

After recently annihilating Blip Fest in New York, cTrix (Melbourne) will pummel you with low-fi house from his two Commodore Amigas. Guaranteed you won't stay still.

Also fresh from a US tour, Dot.AY (Brisbane) brings twisted CHIPBASS wobbles and evolving reggaeton rhythms.

Abortifacient and Bankai double team your arse with a back to back versus set of electro, drumstep, and utterly devastating basslines.

Vicious Cyclist's discordant melodies, hard breaks, and positive attitude towards motorists will leave you feeling warm and confused.

godinpants with a little g is a punk. His epic wall of distorted doom bass and gameboy beats will leave your pants heavier.

Straight outta Cronulla, Gentle Hurst prefers you.

9pm - 3am
19 Sydney St, Marrickville
Near Sydenham Station

****Same Night as the 10k gig at Oxford Arts... Just go to both!!!*****

Bankai vs Abortifacient "4 litres of hope"

cTrix Full Blip Set on Free Music Archive

"It was the second night of Blip, I was the last act on, and already so many amazing sets had gone down. That’s the definition of being nervous right there!! Especially when more than half the tunes you have planned are new and haven't been played in front of an audience. But from the outset the crowd were amazing and from random crowd surfers landing on the stage to Luke (of Anamanaguchi) demanding an encore - it was one big party the whole time. Most of this set is played from an Amiga 1200 booted up in Amiga 500 mode and all written for a 512kb unexpanded machine. The third and forth tunes are played from an Atari 2600 strapped onto a guitar-style neck and run though a Bass EQ and old Boss Delay stomp box affectionately known as the gAtari! The set ended when the crowd stormed the stage during the last song and subsequently stomped on the master XLR cables dislodging the earth cable and sending the stage into a buzzing chaos. It couldn’t have been a more fun and spontaneous show! Much love to the Blip orgs and everyone who came that night. And for those that missed it, I hope you enjoy the energy and craziness that this recording managed to capture!" -cTrix

Rubijaq: Unrealeased Compilation 1 & 2

Rubijaq from Brisbane has put out two EP's of his material to date, I guess as a way of packaging up his unreleased tracks and moving on. There is a definite consistency in sound between the tracks which is impressive for a relative newcomer to the scene. Really great dirty glitchy chip bass.. stay tuned to Rubijaq happenings on his Soundcloud.

"Australian and Relative newcomer to the chip-scene, Rubijaq has quickly earned himself a name in Brisbane, playing at the regular Pocket Music nights.

Bass heavy and with no shortage of wobble, yug and gabber gigs, Rubijaq delivers the dirty chip bass the Brisbane scene is becoming known for. Split into two parts, it's easy to see the huge steps Rubijaq has taken in production and writing, and it's still early days! Expect much more in the future!"

Full Blip sets captured on Video: cTrix and 10k

There was a lot that happened at Blip, and in the week surrounding it. Australians were there in great numbers. Dot.AY and Derris-Kharlin killed their Blip-weeks sets. Hopefully videos of those sets will surface soon, but for now, thanks to the Chip Music Chronicle, here are the sets that cTrix (featuring guitari) and I delivered at Blip Festival 2011. Yep, I am self-centered... Also, I believe Dot.AY is going to give a full Blip-Week rundown soon, so stay posted.

Rite Now 5" limited vinyl • Ten Thousand Free Men & Their Families

Dear friend,

I am here to let you know about my latest release, which features two songs you can already get on the internet (just not these superior versions). In this statement, I will tell you each and every reason why you should get your hands on a copy of my latest release, the Rite Now 5" vinyl single.

Following my two CD/free download EPs of early 2010, the birth of my own vinyl record label (Sounds Legit w/ Celsius) and a fantastic lathed vinyl release from my Sydney brother, godinpants, I was inspired to try something different for my next release. Vinyl.

I wasn't prepared to settle for any ordinary vinyl release. I wanted to do something special. What I came up with was a super limited clear 5" vinyl single (limited to 50 units). To top this off, I've got eight (or ate, get it?), hand crafted pizza-picture-discs. Each pizza-picture-disc is a one-off, hand drawn artwork by Erin Marshall-Turner (who provided the artwork for Another), set in clear vinyl. C'mon! That alone is worth buying!

If artwork set in vinyl, or a clear vinyl disc is not enough for you, there are also songs on this bad boy! Side A features Rite Now, recorded in Adelaide with Jess Porter and mastered by chipmusic king, cTrix in Melbourne. While Side B features a live recording (captured by Eggo) of the first ever 10k track I yelled over; Bitchwhipped, again mastered by cTrix. Then, each of these records was hand crafted in Brooklyn, NY, with a 1930s lathe just in time for blip fest. Mad props to Adamgetsawesome for picking them up for me and taking photos.

Want one yet? If you're coming to Blip, you'll have your chance.

More pics and talk in this cm.o thread.

"Atari 2600 Tracking Solution" video from cTrix

In the spirit of Game Boy Australia becoming an Aussie Dev blog, we have the following video from cTrix.

Atari 2600 Tracking Solution from ctrix on Vimeo.

"The first beta version of Atari-x-mod which is an Atari 2600 asm translator. An optimizer is coming in the future, but for now this works enough so new comers can easily play with ideas. I still find it's easier to put the basic tune together and turn to the assembly code to tweak everything. It uses Paul Slocum's play routine although a slightly modified version to allow triplet times / shuffles is hopefully coming in the future."

Keep on top of this project by monitoring this cm.o thread. Word has it he is writing some dope tunes as well. Keep an ear out.

More info on all of this on his blog, under the chiptech tag.

abrasive's drag and drop, battery-less, USB Game Boy cart project update

Drag'n'Derp lives:

So, no update on this for a while; real life has been keeping me busy. Nonetheless, I have found some time recently to get another tranche of work done on the cart design, to the point of having a couple of working prototypes now in testing.

  • 24MBit (3MByte) flash ROM
  • 1MBit (128KByte) Ferroelectric RAM
Instead of battery-backed SRAM, the cart uses F-RAM, which maintains its contents in the absence of power, and has a data retention span on the order of a hundred years.
  • USB mass storage emulation
The cart appears similar to a thumb drive, allowing ROM and RAM contents to be copied via drag and drop. No drivers are required, and supports all USB-capable platforms.
Check abrasive's blog post for the full update.

Triforce and Sky Crawlers: more chip in Sydney

Sorry for the "10k's Diary" type post here. This style of blogging has never really been a big feature of GBA (which I generally like), but a few things have happened recently that deserve attention. It seems two acts that I (and I am sure others) have been vaguely aware of have just knocked it up a gear in Sydney. After recently meeting Friendly Mike of Sky Crawlers, it has become apparent that these guys are planning on doing something big, sometime soon.

Check out: Triforce and Sky Crawlers.

Both these acts (which I understand to be friends in some way) have developed followings, using chipsounds in the overall pallet of their respective dance/post-hardcore/other style tunes. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Will it move deeper into the insular, global chipscene? Will it take another route? Who the fuck knows? I look forward to finding out.

Have a squiz at this recently uploaded promo clip from Triforce.

cTrix and 10k at Blip11 in NYC

"Propelled forth from the forgotten abyss of yesterday’s future is Blip Festival NYC 2011. Co-presented by 8bitpeoples and The Tank, Blip Festival showcases the best creations in art, music, and culture using retro game and computer hardware at Manhattan’s Eyebeam May 19 – 21, 2011.

Entering it’s fifth year, this iteration of Blip Festival showcases an international chip community that stands at a crossroads. Now firmly entrenched in mainstream culture with chipsounds and pixel art finding their way into television, motion pictures, and ironically enough, modern video games, Chip musicians and artists find they are no longer expected to educate their audiences but, instead, are free to innovate. As the community becomes less of a genre and more of an ethos, documenting the ever-growing diversification of the community is the Blip Festival’s top goal." - via blip website

Pocket Music Anniversary Videos

Quite possibly the worst videos ever (because they don't have me... no kidding they are really terrible I suggest thinking of them as abstract visuals or just listening to the audio which is actually pretty good)

Acts in Video : Vid 1: Slato, Rubijaq ... Vid 2: godinpants, Cheapshot

thanks heaps to Douglas Craig for being more interested in dancing his arse off than filming... GOOD ONYA!@|!@!

Soundbytes 8 Video!

Paul "gentle-egg" Eggins has uploaded a video from the weekends Soundbytes 8 gig in Melbourne. Featuring, Pselodux, godinpants, Dot.AY, 10k, Cheapshot and cTrix. The sound distorts a fair bit but captures the mood of the gig nicely. Also you can read my tour blogs for a round-up/summary/review of all the recent chip events here.

Videos: Nerdstrobe @ Tone ft. Cheapshot, Dot.AY, godinpants, Abortifacient & 10k

Above is a video I knocked up from the night. Thanks to godinpants for shooting some footage of me.

There are some other great clips floating about that other punters shot, including this:

Radiograffiti on godinpants' "Schrodinger’s Punk is Dead"

"Godinpants just unleashed a noisy little four-tracker titled “Schrodinger’s Punk is Dead” and holy shit does it deliver. This isn’t a Radiograffiti release (yet, hopefully) but we need to pass this along to those who may not follow certain folks in the ever-evolving world of lo-fi chip."

[SYD 14/3/2011] NERDSTOBE: CHEAPSHOT (JP), Dot.AY and godinpants EP Launches

Birdsrobe and present:

Celebrating new EPs from Cheapshot (JP) Dot.AY (BNE) and godinpants (SYD)

with love and support from Sydney's
10kfreemen and Abortifacient.

More on the artists:

• Cheapshot is an 8bit dubstep enigma. on Cheapshot's latest release:

"James York a.k.a. Cheapshot a.k.a. Yorkie a.k.a. better at dubstepwobblebasschipfunk than you has been tearing up the Tokyo live scene for the past year with more fans than a top seed gladiator. This EP is part of the reason why. Dark and gritty, instantly accessible, and hard to forget. Phone home and tell your mother, Cheapshot has arrived."

• Dot.AY makes wonky bass heavy Game Boy Music that will have your head bobbin' and penis throbbin'!

• godinpants combines distorted bass guitar with stupidly low resolution drum samples played back with a Game Boy. So punk you'll blow your junk.

• 10kfreemen yells at a Nintendo Game Boy and calls it music.

• Abortifacient spends more time painting his face in corpse paint than writing tunes. His Game Boy centric tunes are still great despite this.

This delightful event will be taking place at TONE.
Wentworth Ave, Surry Hills.
$10, 8pm, Tuesday March 15.

Thanks dixls for the stfu.jpg poster.

New EP from Sydney's godinpants is trupunk download it now or preorder vinals or get from one of the upcoming festies!!

"godinpants, the fruit born of the unholy union of a japanese whaler and a great blue whale, has decided to release upon the world the brutality that is the "Schrodinger's Punk is Dead" EP.

Equipped with a bass guitar with the volume set to "fuck off" and a gameboy blaring a wall of noisy beats this release is a departure from godinpants previous material through demolishing all preconceived ideas of what chipmusic should be.

Available on bandcamp at name your own price.

This release is available in a limited run of 50 7" records, available at godinpants shows and online. Email god at chkdisbrk dot com for more information. Prices should be roughly $20 for international, and $15 within Australia.

Dot.AY's Ceratopian Society EP Teaser

Soundbytes 8 ft. Cheapsh0t

The headliner for SoundBytes 8 is an absolute highlight of the live chipmusic scene in Tokyo.
His music is dark and gritty, and full of bass so heavy, the airlines are going to have issues with luggage restrictions when he makes the trip here from Tokyo.

The lineup, of course doesn’t end there, and we have some of our most crowd pleasing artists filling out the lineup. Interstate favourites, 10K (SYD), godinpants (SYD) and dot.AY (BNE) will be making their way to town, and both godinpants and dot.AY have new EPs, so plenty of new tunes for your listening pleasure. We also have local talent from cTrix, and a newcomers to SoundBytes Pselodux, who you may have seen at one of his many shows around the local traps and local democene heavyweight Raor bringing some evil amrigacore to the mix.

Get yourself along to ladida on 18/03

$12 on the door, $10 presales.
Talk about how excited you are in this thread.
